growing up

This book is about the life of a young girl and what she has to go through in order to become a young woman. There is much magical realism in the novel. There is much of the everyday life within this book. Friendship is highlighted as being one of the most important things in life. It is thought of as hard to come by and even harder to hold on to. The hardships of life such as falling in love is something that is gone through in this novel. As she is becoming a young woman marriage is an issue as well. Therefore, the next step naturally would be motherhood. These are all part of the way Sarah survived in the novel. She goes through her own personal fears. Sarah is loyal to her friend and is honest. There are symbols you come by in the book that illustrate what the author, Amy Herrick, is trying to convey to you. Entertainment is part of this book in a big way because of the realism overlapping the magic aspect. Sarah's friend has a big role in the person she was molded into throughout the book. This novel is simply based within a girl's mind and heart, yet has major themes which are highlighted in every chapter throughout the book. The two friends both face womanhood together knowing they will need each other through all the twist and turns. I would say that the main theme of this novel is friendship. I recommend this book because it was an easy read. I think teens will appreciate the style of writing the most. You can relate to what the author is talking about and that is appealing. This book shows you what problems you may have and how 'others' handeled it.

Full of whimsy and beauty Herrick takes us with her to a quirky and fantasy-filled world. While dealing with "real" issues such as family, madness and death, she maintains a childlike sense of wonder and openess to the magical things all around us. Very satisfying - and a lovely ending as well!
